headlines that shaped the greatest spectacle in racing
Bill Vukovich won the Indianapolis 500 in 1953 and then again in 1954.
In 1955, the driver was going for an unprecedented third consecutive win. As the race progressed, it looked as if he was going to get it.
However, while leading, Vukovich hit a three-car pileup that included Al Keller, Johnny Boyd and Rodger Ward. Vukovich's car went airborne and landed upside down. Vukovich died from a skull fracture.
His death put an end to a streak of three straight years leading the most laps in the Indy 500, a feat unequaled since.
